AI Safety Research
Infrastructure for Australia

Certes Institute provides research infrastructure for AI safety in Australia — grant administration, researcher employment, and logistical support enabling researchers and partners to work effectively.

What We Do

Infrastructure and operations for catastrophic and existential risk research

  • Research hosting and employment — a university-free home for researchers working on AI safety and catastrophic and existential risk. We house grants, employ researchers free from institutional constraints, and publish work under the Certes name.
  • Grant administration — a charitable home for research grants, including grants from overseas fiscal sponsors, with no university affiliation required.
  • Operational support — residential research programs, training logistics, deploying skilled personnel with agility in accordance with stakeholder needs, and administrative support. We handle the operations so researchers and partners can focus on substance.

Research

Certes supports research in AI safety and the understanding and mitigation of catastrophic and existential risks. Our research agenda is being developed in consultation with our team and research partners.

Where We Are Now

Certes is in its establishment phase. We are finalising charitable registration, appointing our board, and building relationships with Australian AI safety organisations, government bodies, and international research groups.

Our comparative advantage is speed and low overhead — we can move in days where universities take months and government takes years. Tasmania offers affordable operations, state government interest in research talent, and an environment suited to focused work.

About the Institute

Part of the Australian AI Safety Ecosystem

Certes is complementary to existing organisations in the Australian AI safety landscape — we provide infrastructure and operational support, not competing research programs.
